BLOOMINGTON – Illinois continues to operate without a state budget and State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) continues to blame the problem on Democrats.

Brady told WJBC’s Terry James he realizes the message out of Springfield has been the same for six months.

“I think you’re absolutely correct,” said Brady. “The Democrats still want an unbalanced budget. They haven’t even proposed a tax increase.”

Brady added Democrats have been unwilling to talk about meaningful property tax relief, among other issues. The Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council said last week questions about property taxes in Illinois might have cost the area a buyer for the now closed Mitsubishi Plant in Normal.

Brady said there are a “host of things” which need to be done in order to attract buyers for the plant.

“We’ve asked for a property tax freeze and they’ve played games with it. We’ve asked for worker’s compensation reform, some of which we realize need to be put in place to protect injured workers who aren’t getting the benefit they deserve today,” he said.

Pat Quinn

Brady believed former Gov. Pat. Quinn is looking to be governor again.

Quinn has been giving speeches criticizing what’s happening in Springfield. Brady said doing so is his path to reintroducing himself to Illinois.

“Everyone’s got a right to do what they want to do. He’s certainly got a right to say what he wants to say,” said Brady. “But I’m quite confident when I’m out traveling not just my district, but the state, most people say Governor Rauner has to stick to his guns.”

Brady said the governor is doing the right thing by sticking to his guns.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
