NORMAL – There was a reason for the smile on Illinois State football coach Brock Spack’s face Wednesday as he received national letters-of-intent from 16 high school players, including two from Bloomington-Normal schools.

“We had a good day and happy about it,” said Spack. “We addressed some areas of our team that needed some upgrades.”

The group included three offensive linemen, three defensive backs, three linebackers, two quarterbacks, two running backs, a pair of tight ends, one defensive lineman and an athlete, who could play a number of positions.

The class also includes former Boston College wide receiver Chase Pankey, a mid-year transfer who is already enrolled at ISU.

Normal Community’s Garrett Hirsch, a 6-foot-2, 290-pound offensive lineman, and University High’s Austin Galindo, a 6-5, 255-pound defensive lineman, were among the signees along with Central Catholic’s John Hayes (partial scholarship) and Ryan Zitkus (preferred walk-on).

“Austin is a big kid,” said ISU recruiting coordinator and running back coach Lamar Conrad. “Right now, we have him earmarked to play defensive end. He is going to fit right in to what we do. He has a lot of upside. We see a lot of potential in this young man.

“Garrett is another fantastic, tough local product. He will play offensive line for us. Most likely he will come in and play center. He’s just a physical guy, who we see big things in the future from.”

Other signees include running back James Robinson of Rockford Lutheran, who is the state’s all-time leader in rushing yards (9,045), touchdowns (158) and points scored (948), along with nine other offensive standouts, including running back Artiss Henderson of Irving, Texas.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life
