DES MOINES – A Republican party strategist said Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is just the first of probably several candidates who will drop out of the GOP race in the coming days.

Former Illinois Republican Party chairman Pat Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he expects the GOP field will be thinned after the New Hampshire primary next week.

“Most of these folks are out after Tuesday because if they do stay in they are really going to irritate people because they are taking away from candidates who might actually be able to win the general election,” Brady said.

Brady said he hopes that paves the way for Ohio Gov. John Kasich to make a surge.

“What Republicans are looking for is one person to get behind that’s not (Donald) Trump or (Ted) Cruz and I think (Kasich needs) a high second or pull off some miracle in New Hampshire,” Brady said. “I think he’s said as much.”

Brady said Trump’s high unfavorable ratings finally caught up with him in Iowa, where Cruz pulled out the upset win in the caucuses.

“A big chuck of the people turned out not to support a candidate but to stop Trump,” Brady said. “Trump’s people didn’t really turn out.

He added Cruz also benefited from a strong grassroots campaign.

“There’s 99 counties in Iowa and he’s had a county chair representing him in every county for a year, Trump didn’t have any of that,” Brady said. “(Trump) only stayed overnight in Iowa for one night.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
