My parents and grandparents planted the seeds of sharing and giving to others at an early age. Although at times we did not have much, we were taught that what we did have may be more than someone else had, therefore, we did indeed have enough. Their justification was that we all needed each other to survive and to have a chance at a better life. That made sense to me and taught me the power of giving. I believe it is in that spirit of giving that we keep our communities strong and better for all.
It is not enough to just understand the power of giving; we must go a step further and be a part of the giving process to ensure that we have a community that is united in creating a better life for everyone. Last year I was invited to be a part of planning a new event for our community. The idea of coming together to create a unique and fun event that would allow women another opportunity to do our collective part was just right for me. Just imagine walking into the Doubletree on Thursday, May 5 at 5:30 p.m. and seeing a room full of designer purses that you can bid on and take home as many as you can get! Girlfriends get ready, that is the Power of the Purse, the new, fun United Way sponsored event that will benefit the construction of a home to be built solely by Habitat for Humanity – Women Build of McLean County.
The United Way of McLean County has been a strong force, partnering with various organizations dedicated to social issues, education, income and health. This year, more than ever, the United Way of McLean County needs the power of our giving to reach the annual fundraising goal. If each person or household that has the capacity to contribute would, it will help reach the goal. Giving to this campaign will provide rides for children to after school programs; ensure home care visits for senior citizens, and so much more. The wrap up date for the campaign has been extended to March 10. Every donation, no matter how large or small, will make a difference!
For more information regarding donating to the fundraising campaign, and registering for the Power of the Purse event, go to www.uwaymc.org.
Let’s all do our part and demonstrate the power of giving in McLean County!
