NORMAL- Illinois State head volleyball coach Melissa Myers has named Peter Netisingha an assistant volleyball coach, Myers announced Friday.

Netisingha, a native of the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, Illinois, comes to Illinois State after most recently serving as a graduate/volunteer assistant at 2015 NCAA national champion Nebraska. Netisingha has also coached at Ohio and Wisconsin, and served as an instructor at several high-level summer camps, all while serving as a coach at the club level.

“I’m looking forward to adding Peter to our staff and program. Throughout the interview process, he was professional and prepared, and he is eager to get to work,” Myers said. “He has been part of high-level and successful programs, and will be a great asset in our gym.”

Netisingha served as an assistant at Nebraska for two seasons, helping the Huskers to back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, culminating with the team’s championship run this past fall. Among his responsibilities at Nebraska were on-court instruction, scouting, video analysis and strategic planning.

“I want to thank Melissa, her staff, the athletics department, and Illinois State University for the opportunity to work for a program in my home state with great tradition and success,” Netisingha said. “I look forward to getting to know everyone in the Redbird Family.”

Before his time at Nebraska, Netisingha spent a year as a volunteer assistant at Ohio, where he helped the Bobcats to 2013 Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and an NCAA Tournament berth.

Netisingha also spent three seasons as a volunteer coach at Wisconsin, from 2009-11, where he got his start in collegiate coaching.

Also active in the club ranks, Netisingha has coached four teams in three different states. His most recent position was as head coach of Volleyball Club Nebraska’s 15 Elite team, which earned a fifth-place finish at the AAU National Tournament.

Netisingha earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wisconsin in 2012. He started his collegiate career at St. Ambrose, where he was a member of the men’s volleyball team.

Netisingha joins an Illinois State volleyball team that posted a 22-10 overall record in 2015, and has won 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 17 years.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
