GOP strategist: Brokered convention likely only way to stop Trump

CHICAGO – Donald Trump’s seven-state romp on Super Tuesday is making it harder for his opponents to see a pathway to the nomination.

A Republican Party strategist said the only way Trump can be defeated is by having fewer opponents.

Former Illinois Republican Party chairman Pat Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin it’s time those in the anti-Trump movement unite.

“People that actually believe the conservative way of government is the right way need to coalesce around one or any of those candidates that are still in it – (Marco) Rubio, (Ted) Cruz, (John) Kasich, whomever – and just make sure the goal should be, flat out, to stop Trump,” Brady said.

Even then, Brady said it would likely take a brokered convention, something that hasn’t happened in decades.

“I think we are hoping now for some sort of brokered convention,” Brady said.

Brady is making a case for Kasich saying Cruz’ evangelical base ended up voting for Trump and Marco Rubio has shown desperation in recent days trying to throw personal attacks at Trump.

“You don’t get down in the dirt with Donald Trump,” Brady said. “If you talk about his hands or his spray tan or whatever, that diminished him more than it helped him.”
