Eureka College to hold public memorial for Nancy Reagan

EUREKA – Eureka College is planning a public memorial service for former first lady Nancy Reagan who died Sunday at age 94.

President Ronald Reagan’s alma mater gave Mrs. Reagan an honorary doctor of humane letters degree in 2009. Eureka College President J. David Arnold said Mrs. Reagan’s made multiple visits to campus and was an “inspiration to students” and to all Americans.

Gov. Bruce Rauner issued a statement, saying Nancy Reagan “will be remembered for her unwavering support of our country and as a pillar of strength to one of our nation’s greatest presidents.” The Rev. Jesse Jackson said he was “deeply impressed” with Mrs. Reagan’s determination to fight drug abuse after meeting her at the White House in 1986.

The Greater Illinois Alzheimer’s Association cited Mrs. Reagan’s “tireless efforts helped increase awareness for Alzheimer’s disease” after her husband was diagnosed with the disease.
