BLOOMINGTON – Mike Bolhuis has been named the new Head Volleyball Coach at University High School. He replaces veteran coach Karen Valouche who stepped down at the end of the 2015-2016 season.

Bolhuis, a 2013 graduate of Illinois State University, led Deer Creek-Mackinaw High School to the 2012 IHSA 2A State Championship in his first season as head coach. Dee-Mack finished the season with a 38-1 record. His team’s accomplishments earned him the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame “Male Coach of the Year” award for 2012.

Bolhuis is currently finishing his second year as a Physical Education instructor and Head Volleyball Coach at LeRoy High School. He also served as an Assistant Volleyball Coach at Tri-Valley High School in Downs.

“Mike is a young, enthusiastic coach who has a true passion for the game of volleyball,” said Wendy Smith, Director of Athletics and Activities. “I believe his leadership abilities and knowledge of the game will help U-High student-athletes elevate both their individual and team levels of success. Mike is a true student of the game who will always be looking for ways to educate and motivate himself, our players, and our coaching staff.”
