Titan baseball falls in 10 innings at WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team surrendered two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lose by a 9-8 score to Washington U. on Friday, March 26, at Kelly Field at Irv Utz Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.

The Titans slip to 6-7 overall while the Bears improved to 14-8 and have won all six of their home games this season.

Sophomore first baseman Tim Smyk had four hits and three runs batted in, including knocking home junior third baseman Jarrod Juskiewicz, who had reached on a walk, for the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning, giving IWU an 8-7 lead. In the last of the 10th, the Bears got a one-out double and three straight walks to tie the game at 8-8 before a walk-off single by WashU shortstop Austin Darmawan, who had three hits and stole three bases.

IWU trailed 6-2 before tying the score a 6-6 with four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh.

Freshman John Bosco led off with a single and scored on a one-out double by Smyk. When freshman Ben Manski reached on a two-base throwing error, Smyk was able to score and Manski came home on s pinch-hit single delivered by sophomore Brian Johnson.Johnson went to third on a single by sophomore second baseman Gino Cavanlieri and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior centerfielder Adam Glogovsky.

The Titans committed four errors and were outhit 17-13. Bosco had three hits for IWU and Glogovsky and junior catcher Pat Mollo each had two hits.

Freshman Nick Brune (2-1) took the loss as he pitched the 10th inning and allowed two runs on two hits with three walks while retiring only the lead-off hitter in the frame. Sophomore Louis Acklin, the third of four IWU hurlers, worked a solid 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Washington U. left 15 runners on base and stranded men in every inning but the second.

The same two teams will play a doubleheader in St. Louis beginning at noon on Saturday.
