NORMAL-The annual Spring Showcase for Illinois State, which took place Saturday at Hancock Stadium, saw a 14-10 victory for the Red Team in front of a crowd of 1,071.

The spring game pinned the Red Team, which included the first offensive and second defensive team, against the white team made up of the second offensive team and first defense.  Redshirt sophomore starting quarterback Jake Kolbe played for both offenses during the first half.

The Red Team broke the scoring drought in the second quarter when DeMarco Corbin broke away on a fourth down with 42-yard touchdown run. Veteran kicker Sean Slattery converted the Point After Touchdown to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.

The White Team got on the board on its first possession of the second half. Quarterback Dakota Thelen found Anthony Fowler for a 70-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven points apiece.

The White Team took a 10-7 lead with three minutes to play in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal from Normal West product Zach Breen.

The Red Team appeared to be out of time after Kolbe fumbled the snap on the three yardline with 40 seconds to play. However, on the next play, Kolbe was able to find target Spencer Schnell in the endzone as time expired to give the Red Team the last second victory.

The end of the Spring Showcase concludes Illinois State’s five week Spring Football practices.

The Redbirds first game of the 2016 season is September 3 at Hancock Stadium against Valparaiso for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
