BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public of a phone scam in the area.
Sgt. Bill Tate said several residents have contacted the department regarding calls they’ve received from a person claiming to be from the sheriff’s office and that the person has a warrant for missing a federal grand jury subpoena.
“They’re trying to get people to wire money to them through Western Union,” said Tate. “We never call people on the phone and tell them they have warrants and ask for them to send us money – we don’t operate that way.”
Tate added the office has had this type of scam pop up several times over the past year. He said as far as they know, no one has fallen victim to the scam.
Tate explained if you receive this call to hang up and not give out any personal information.
