Chiefs fall one run short to Lake County

EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Peoria Chiefs rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning but ultimately fell to the Lake County Captains 3-2 on Friday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 9-12 on the season and 1-3 on the roadtrip.

Lake County took a 1-0 lead in the third inning against Ryan Helsley as Nate Winfrey walked and moved to second on a groundout. With two down Tyler Kreiger singled to right to score Winfrey with the game’s first run. The Captains added on in the fifth as Nathan Lukes singled and stole second with one out. After a strikeout, Kreiger made it 2-0 with a single to right. Magneuris Sierra kept the game 2-0 as he threw out Ka’ai Tom trying to score from second on a single to center with Chandler Hawkins on the mound.

The Chiefs tied the game in the eighth against the Captains bullpen. Craig Aikin singled before Courtland Cox left the game with an injury. Aikin stole second as new pitcher Kieran Lovegrove recorded two outs. R.J. Dennard singled up the middle to drive in Aikin and Chris Chinea’s double brought home Dennard to tie the game. Chinea was left at second as Eli Alvarez grounded out to end the inning.

Landon Beck took over on the mound in the bottom of the eighth and with one out he allowed a single and issued a walk. Beck struck out Anthony Miller for the second out by Sam Haggerty hit a go-ahead double to right to plate Tom for the 3-2 Captains lead. The Chiefs got the tying run to second base in the ninth inning but Lovegrove struck out Aikin looking to end the game.

Helsley struck out eight and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two over five innings. He faced two batters in the sixth and took a no-decision. Hawkins allowed one hit and struck out two over two shutout innings. Beck (0-2) took the loss allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over one inning.
