WJBC Forum: Unrelated items

By Mary Kay Scharf

I have a variety of unrelated items for today’s forum and I will reiterate that the content of forums are not the opinions of the radio station.

Let’s start with my annual reminder that school is out and to be on the lookout for children whose play may interfere with safety…please slow down and be safe.  You may also see the occasional parent running from a house whose near insanity could result in a run into the street; fortunately this typically does not occur until early August!

Moving on…let’s talk for a moment about name-calling…One of the definitions I found for name calling is:

abusive or insulting language referring to a person or group

From an early age, we begin to teach children how unkind name-calling is and how it is hurtful and inappropriate. We teach them alternative ways to communicate and to solve problems…yet there are people who continue thisoffensive behavior into adulthood.

Is anyone else frightened by the potential world-ending disaster that might result if we elect a president whose social skills still includes daily name-calling?I am certainly afraid for the future of our country and the larger target we will become if our elected commander in Chief antagonizes other world leaders by name-calling.

Another topic, that is clearly not the opinion of the radio station relates to showing long-time and loyal employees respect and appreciation. While a reduction in staff is a sad necessity in business, treating those being let go with dignity and respect should be a priority in the process.  That being said, I wish to thank Colleen Reynolds for news, information, and entertainment over the many years I have been a listener.  While you may have been shown less than respect and appreciation, please know that the community of listeners appreciated your dedicated years of service.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
