NORMAL – Illinois State freshman shortstop Owen Miller has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, the newspaper Collegiate Baseball announced Tuesday.

Miller, a native of Fredonia, Wisc., led Illinois State in several offensive categories during his first collegiate season. He topped the team in batting average (.328) and slugging percentage (.498). He also led the team in hits (77), at-bats (235), doubles (23) and RBIs (44). Miller’s at-bats and doubles totals rank as the second-best marks in Illinois State single-season history.

Miller had several memorable performances during his freshman season. He homered three times in one day, in a doubleheader against Central Michigan and Butler on March 12, and tallied four hits and drove in a career-high five runs in Illinois State’s 8-6 win at Evansville on May 1.

One of only two Redbirds to play in every game during the 2016 season, Miller also ranked among the Missouri Valley Conference leaders in three key categories. He led the league in doubles and ranked fourth in total hits. His batting average was the seventh-best mark in the conference.

Miller was named an All-MVC Honorable Mention selection following the regular season.

The Illinois State baseball team posted a 17-37 overall record, and a 7-13 mark in MVC play, in 2016.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
