MARION – The Normal CornBelters gave up a 3-0 lead as the Southern Illinois Miners salvaged the final game of the series 5-4 in 11 innings on Sunday night at Rent One Park.

The CornBelters once again scored in the first inning as Santiago Chirino led off with a single followed by a double to the right field corner by Dylan Kelly, with both scoring on an Aaron Dudley single up the middle.

Elijah Trail lifted a towering home run inside the left field pole in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Miners finally tallied in the seventh inning with a bases-loaded walk with one out to end the night for Belters starter Mike Schweiss, then scored on a fielder’s choice by Aaron Gates when the Belters narrowly missed turning a double play to cut the deficit to 3-2. Julius Gaines then singled through the right side to force a 3-3 tie.

The Miners grabbed a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning by loading the bases and scoring on a Steve Marino single. The Belters sent the game to extra time with a run in the ninth as Nolan Meadows plated Ty Morris with a base hit through the right side for a 4-4 tie.

The contest remained even until the 11th inning when the Miners pushed the international tie breaker runner Alex DeLeon to third base with a balk and to the plate with a single through the left side of the drawn-in infield by Vin Guglietti for the win.

Kyle Tiniuis (1-0) picked up the win while Horatio Acosta (3-2) came on in the final frame and took the loss.

The Belters have Monday off before beginning a three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies at the Corn Crib. Game time is 6:35 each night.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
