PONTIAC – As several storms produced tornadoes Wednesday night in Northern Illinois, a late night string of storms produced a tornado which struck Pontiac.

The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down in Pontiac at 10:15 p.m.

WMBD reports four people were injured, but nothing that’s considered life threatening.

“From what I’m told, we’ve had two people taken to the hospital from the trailer that overturned, nothing life-threatening,”  Pontiac Police Chief Jim Woolford told CIProud.com. “The semi driver from here at the Shell…may have had some shoulder injury and I’m told a pedestrian got hit by some flying things.”

Linda Guzman said she watched out of her window as a tornado picked up a nearby home in her trailer park.

“Our whole trailer shook,” Guzman said. “It was really scary, It was like 20 trains were coming through my house.”

Pontiac resident Steve Starr witnessed much of the damage.

“There was a semi that had blown over,” Starr said. “It was a tanker and (we were) very concerned as to whether it had fuel in it. Apparently it was empty thank goodness.”

Livingston County emergency manager Chuck Schopp said two people had become trapped inside their mobile home during the storm but they were able to escape. No injuries were reported. There was also significant damage at the Walmart in Pontiac. WMBD reports shoppers were able to take cover, but had to immediately evacuate after the storm passed due to a gas leak.

Security personnel at Walmart said no one at that location was hurt, but they’re keeping the parking lot shut down for the time being.

According to reports, the southern portion of town received the most damage. Several widespread power outages were also reported.

The storm also sparked confirmed tornadoes near Piper City, and Chatsworth, however no damage has been reported with those storms.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
