Redbirds hoping to secure the trenches with experienced offensive line

NORMAL – It’s not an easy task replacing two players who accounted for the majority of your offense over a two year period.

That’s the job Illinois State football coaches have been facing as they prepare for the 2016 season. The task is made much easier when you have all five starting offensive linemen returning, according to co-offensive coordinator Dan Clark.

“They’ve got some work to do,” said Clark. “But when you’ve got the trenches – the guys that handle the trenches – you’ve got that secure, then you feel good about protecting a new quarterback and opening holes for a new running back.”

The bulk of Clark’s duties will be working with the ISU linemen, as he and fellow co-offensive coordinator Billy Dicken take the reins of what’s been a high powered Redbird offense the past two years. Clark said he’s “ecstatic” to have all five starters back.

“These five guys have been through it all,” said Clark. “They epitomize what Illinois State offensive linemen are in their work ethic and what they bring to the team. They’re hardnosed, tough, smart, and they love football.”

Clark has been spending the off-season focusing on his linemen’s weaknesses, while building on their strengths.

“Little different techniques, combination blocks, whatever it might be. Really getting into the film room and studying themselves and being critical on themselves,” he said.

The Redbirds begin their quest for a third straight FCS playoff appearance on Sep. 3 at home versus Valparaiso.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
