SCHAUMBURG – The Normal CornBelters won a pitcher’s duel for the second straight night, taking the rubber game of the series over the Schaumburg Boomers 3-1 on Sunday night at Boomers Stadium.
The Belters opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run to the left field party deck by Dillon Haupt.
Normal tacked on a run in the seventh inning when Nolan Meadows doubled to left center, went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right field by Craig Lepre.
The Boomers threatened with two outs in the ninth inning with a triple off the right center wall by Paul Kronenfeld and an RBI double by Mikal Hall off reliever Francisco Carillo for the final tally.
Horatio Acosta (4-2) earned the win with seven shutout innings, giving up three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Seth Webster (4-4) went the distance in the loss, giving up the three earned runs on nine hits and seven strikeouts without a walk. Carillo pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save.
The CornBelters take Monday off before the Gateway Grizzlies visit the Corn Crib to begin a six-game homestand that runs Tuesday through Sunday.
