NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters received another strong pitching start supported by solid hitting and fielding in an 8-1 win over the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night at the Corn Crib.

The CornBelters struck right away as Justin Fletcher led off with an infield single followed by a home run by Aaron Dudley to right center. Dudley bounced a base hit up the middle in the third inning to score Fletcher to extend the Belters advantage to 3-0.

The Boomers scratched out their first two hits to lead off the fourth inning, scoring a run on a throwing error on an attempted double play to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Belters added a pair of runs in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Brandon Roberts in his professional debut and a base hit by Craig Lepre to build the lead to 5-1. Nolan Meadows pushed the score to 8-1 in the seventh with a screaming line drive three-run homer to the right field lawn.

Charlie Gillies (2-1) earned the win with eight innings on the mound, giving up one run (earned) on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Scott Schultz (4-3) received the loss after working six innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Belters hit the road for six games in the Cleveland and Pittsburgh areas before returning home next Friday. The CornBelters face the Lake Erie Crushers in Avon, Ohio Friday, Saturday and Sunday before a midweek series at the Washington Wild Things.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
