BLOOMINGTON – The opening of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Bloomington may be delayed this August.
Principal Jamie Hartrich tells WJBC news carpet in the science room is damaged and the tile underneath the carpet was sealed to the floor with asbestos. Two boys allegedly broke into the school Saturday.
“We have a new wing which was built in 2001 and we have an older building which was built in 1954,” said Hartrich. “So we have asbestos tile that we want to make sure that we are not breaking into or any of that. We want the safety of our children when they return to school to be the best.”
Hartrich tried to chase the boys, but slipped and fell.
Teachers report to school on the 15th with students scheduled to return August 18th.
The state is investigating to make sure none of the asbestos was released into the air.
