Miners explode in 5th inning to defeat CornBelters

MARION – The Normal CornBelters surrendered six runs in the fifth inning and lost their third straight game, 11-1 to the Southern Illinois Miners on Wednesday night at Rent One Park.

The CornBelters struck first with a two-out rally in the opening frame when Aaron Dudley walked, Nolan Meadows singled and Dillon Haupt doubled to the left field corner to send Dudley home.

The Miners took advantage of two walks in the third inning by scoring them both on a fly ball to shallow left center field by Steve Marino that fell between three fielders for a 2-1 lead.

The hosts exploded for six runs in the fifth inning on run-scoring singles from Shane Kennedy and Nolan Earley, an RBI double by Marino and a three-run homer by Toby DeMello for an 8-1 advantage.

Southern Illinois added a run in the sixth on consecutive two-out doubles by Earley and Marino, then two more in the seventh on a triple by Aaron Gates and an error for an 11-1 lead.

Brooks Trujillo (3-3) worked seven innings with one earned run on six hits with three walks and one strikeout. Mike Schweiss (7-5) took the loss with four and one-third innings, giving up seven earned runs on four hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts.

The road trip concludes with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch in Marion as the Belters send Chris Carmain (5-6, 4.50 ERA) to the mound while the Miners counter with Corey Sessions (0-1, 4.91) in a duel of righthanders. The broadcast on WJBC.com begins at 6:50. The Belters return to Normal for a brief three-game homestand with the River City Rascals beginning with a 6:35 p.m. contest on Friday evening at the Corn Crib.
