NORMAL – Illinois State head men’s basketball coach Dan Muller announced the hiring of Darshawn McClellan as the program’s video coordinator Monday.

A former player at Vanderbilt, McClellan served as a player development assistant with the Commodore men’s basketball program during the 2015-16 season following a three-year playing career overseas and work in the private sector.

“Darshawn was a player when I was an assistant at Vanderbilt who I always thought could become a terrific coach,” Muller said. “With a year of video experience under his belt at Vanderbilt, along with the type of person he is, Darshawn is the perfect guy for this job.”

McClellan graduated from Vanderbilt in 2011 with a degree in human and organizational development and played in 88 career games with 13 starts. He averaged 2.3 points and 2.5 rebounds and scored a career-high 11 points in a Vanderbilt win at Arkansas while also adding three rebounds, two assists and a block against the Razorbacks Feb. 27, 2010.

“I am extremely excited to be a part of the Illinois State men’s basketball program,” McClellan said. “I am beyond grateful for the opportunity Coach Muller has given me to learn and grow as an aspiring coach. I look forward to aiding in the growth of the Redbird basketball program, working with the players, and getting to know the Redbird community.”

After graduating from Vanderbilt, McClellan played a fifth year with Louisiana at Lafayette as a graduate student, where he averaged 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in his only season with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

McClellan played professionally overseas from 2012 until 2014, playing in Iceland, Japan and Luxembourg. He also served as an assistant coach at Thomas Edison High School, his alma mater in Fresno, California, during his offseasons. After moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2014, he served as a counselor at Youth Villages, a private nonprofit dedicated to helping thousands of emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families live successfully.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
