APPLETON, Wisc. – The Peoria Chiefs used two big innings to blowout the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 11-5 on Wednesday night. The win, their second in a row, moves the Chiefs to 68-60 on the season and 28-30 in the second half.
The Chiefs loaded the bases against Trey Supak in the second inning and went on top 1-0 when Josh Swirchak was hit by a pitch in the helmet. Magneuris Sierra followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 lead though Swirchak was out at third on the play.
Wisconsin scored two unearned runs in the third against Jorge Rodriguez. After two errors and a balk, Wisconsin got on the board with a wild pitch. Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Will Middlebrooks drove home a run in his second rehab at-bat to cut the Chiefs lead to 3-2.
The Chiefs took advantage of two Wisconsin errors to scored four runs in the fourth inning. Matt Davis led off with a double and scored on a single by Swirchak. Sierra reached on an error and Jose Martinez drove home Swirchak for a 5-2 lead. Sierra came home on an error and the Chiefs took a 7-2 lead as Martinez scored on a third error in the inning.
Peoria put the game out of reach in the sixth. With two on and two out, Leo Pina launched a three-run homer over the high left-field wall for a 10-2 lead. Wisconsin’s Trent Clark singled home two in the seventh to cut the Chiefs lead to 10-5. Swirchak’s second hit of the game was a double to score Carlos Torres in the ninth for the 11-5 final score.
Rodriguez (3-1) picked up the win with six innings of work. He allowed two unearned runs on two hits while striking out six. Nick Frey allowed three runs on four hits over two innings while striking out one. Steven De La Cruz walked one and struck out two in a hitless ninth inning.
