PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs gave up an unearned run in the fifth inning and lost to the Beloit Snappers 2-1 on Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 32-33 in the second half and 72-63 overall with four games left.
The Chiefs took the lead in the bottom of the first against Armando Ruiz. Magneuris Sierra led off with a single and Jose Martinez singled to center. Sierra moved to third as Eli Alvarez reached on a fielders’ choice with Martinez out at second. Alvarez stole second and Collin Theroux’s throw was wild allowing Sierra to score for a 1-0 lead. Alvarez moved to third on a groundout by Brian O’Keefe but was left stranded.
Beloit tied the game against starter Jake Woodford in the second. With two outs Robert Martinez doubled and Theroux walked. Trace Loehr doubled to right scoring Martinez to tie the game but Theroux was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Snappers took the lead against John Kilichowski in the fifth. Martinez reached on a throwing error by Leo Pina at third base. Loehr singled with one out and Beloit took the lead on a two-out single by Trent Gilbert.
The Chiefs didn’t have a base runner from the third to the eighth against Ruiz and Rob Huber. Sierra beat out an infield single with two outs in the eighth but was left at first as the Chiefs last base runner.
Woodford threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one. Kilichowski (1-3) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run. He struck out six and allowed one unearned run on three hits. Tyler Bray struck out three and allowed an infield single in his one inning. Josh Wirsu struck out one in a perfect inning.
