NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Illinois State soccer team falls to 1-4-0 on the season after a hard-fought battle against Notre Dame (4-1-0) 1-0.

The Redbirds stayed even with Notre Dame as both teams finished with five shots on goal.

“I was proud of the way our team competed tonight against a quality team in Notre Dame,” coach Eric Golz said. “We knew we were going to be under pressure, and there were some really good moments we broke their pressure to create some good scoring opportunities of our own. Although I am disappointed with the result and how we conceded the goal, I am pleased with our response and execution when we made some adjustments at half time. There were a lot of positives that we can take moving forward.”

Senior midfielder Brooke Ksiazek opened shooting for the Redbirds with a shot on goal in the ninth minute of the match. Senior Lauren Koehl and junior Emily Dickman also had shots in the first half.

The Redbird defense held Notre Dame to only two shots on goal in the first half. The game went scoreless until the 41st minute when Kaitlin Klawunder got a header past freshman goalkeeper Haley Smith.

ISU kept the pressure on during the second half with two shots, one on goal, in the first seven minutes of play. The Redbird defense continued to show out, holding Notre Dame to two shots on goal in the second half, giving them only four for the entire match while the Redbirds finished with five on goal and eight total.

The Redbirds return to Adelaide Street Field Sunday to host Green Bay. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
