BLOOMINGTON – Ward 8 alderwoman Diana Hauman on Monday announced her candidacy for mayor in the April 2017 non-partisan election.

Hauman, whose ward covers east and southeast Bloomington, was appointed to the City Council in September 2014. Mayor Tari Renner is the only other candidate to declare for the seat.

She said in a news release there are many positive features in the community including: a highly educated and talented workforce, excellent education systems, interstate access to Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis and a diverse and stable local economy.

“Even with all these assets,” she said. “I think we can do better.

“Our first priority,” Hauman said, “is to continue to maintain our high levels of public safety, continuing to support our police and fire departments. Then, like any successful organization, we need to know where we are going. This requires a strategic plan that defines what we want to be as a city, including concrete plans to get us there and the willingness to implement those plans.”

Hauman has held leadership positions in Kiwanis, Toastmasters, the Multicultural Leadership Program; she serves on committees for the McLean County League of Women Voters, ISU Senior Professionals, and BN Advantage. Before retirement, Hauman served in leadership roles in learning and development professional organizations.

“The second half of my professional life was devoted to leadership, both as a leader and in helping others to achieve their leadership potential,” Hauman said. “My various affiliations in the community provide me with the unique opportunity to listen to the broad range of opinions in our community.”

Candidates can begin circulating petitions. Petitions must be filed Nov. 21-28. The general election is scheduled for April 4. A primary election would be held on Feb. 28 if there are more than two candidates.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
