NORMAL – Equity and inclusion are two main themes for a conference that’s coming to Illinois State University next month.

ISU special education professor Stacy Hardin is helping to organize the conference at Bone Student Center Oct. 24-25.

“The Culturally Responsive Campus Community initiative is basically trying to make sure our community and our campus is equipped to handle difficult conversations, tough conversations,” Hardin said.

She said topics include “things that are prevalent right now in our country, things that bother or offend subgroups, such as racism and sexism.”

Education activist Christine Sleeter, author of the newly-published “White Bread,” is the keynote speaker.

Registration is available online here. The deadline is Oct. 15.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
