BLOOMINGTON – Police have new challenges when dealing with modern street gangs according to one law enforcement official.
Bloomington Police Chief Brendan Heffner said the so-called hybrid gangs are made up of younger people who use social media to antagonize each other, particularly through videos.
“They feel they’re disrespecting each other,” Heffner said. “You and I look at the videos and we wouldn’t think they’re that bad, but to them, they are disrepecting each other in these videos, and they meet up and do things.”
Heffner said hybrid gangs have no hierarchy like other street gangs, plus they are made up of younger people who don’t listen to anyone outside their circle. Heffner said many gang-related crimes result in little time behind bars, and the chief said more time in custody would help everyone.
“Sometimes a person needs to be out of the element in order to get the help that they need,” Heffner said. “Also, not to be a threat to the public but also, they’re safer sometimes being away from the element for a certain amount of time for their own safety.”
Heffner said police have met with leaders of more structured street gangs, but it’s more difficult with hybrid gangs because of their makeup and attitude.
