BLOOMINGTON – ‘Disgusting, appalling, outrageous’ are some of the words Gov. Bruce Rauner has used to describe the vulgar comments Donald Trump made about women in a recently released recording from 2005.

Rauner has said he won’t endorse any candidate for president and even skipped the party’s convention in Cleveland. Former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin it’s best for Rauner not to get involved.

“Just stay out of it,” Brady said. “You get into it with Trump, no matter what you do, you are going to get dirty.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan has said he won’t defend Trump and is offering political cover for other Republicans who have pulled their support of the party’s nominee. Brady said Ryan is trying to head off a potentially disastrous election for the GOP.

“I think Speaker Ryan is doing the responsible thing,” Ryan said. “The tapes that came out Friday, are terrible. the Trump camp nationally and electorally is in really bad shape. It’s a long shot for them to win, so you just have to be smart about it and win what you can.”

Brady said a negative flip in the polls for Trump in key swing states like Florida and Ohio should have party leaders concerned.

“If he doesn’t win Florida, there’s no path of him to to win,” Brady said. “He’s down five or six (points) there now, He’s down five or six in Ohio. That’s a complete turnaround from a week ago.”

The latest polling doesn’t reflect the second presidential debate.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
