NORMAL – University High School has taken home its 10th golf state championship in 25 years.

Dylan Panizo said his one goal since his sophomore year has been to win state.

“The last two years, all summer, all day even sometimes, wake up as soon as the sun rose go back golf at the course and not get home until the day was done,” he said.

Dallas Koth, whose brother also won a golf championship with the school, said experience was a major factor this year.

“The last time we’ve been here in this position we were young,” said Koth. “My freshman year I had a team that didn’t work as hard as these guys.”

Athletic Director Wendy Smith has been with U-High for 22 years and said the attitudes of the students help determine their level of success.

“Our golf program here has a long tradition of being successful so I think every year when we have kinds come into the program they kind of understand that,” Smith said.

The school held an assembly to recognize the team Tuesday afternoon.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
