ST. LOUIS – Illinois State’s Courtney Pence has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

A sophomore from Springfield, Pence helped Illinois State to a pair of league victories over the weekend, as the Redbirds earned sweeps at Bradley on Friday and Loyola Chicago on Saturday.

Pence continued her streak of leading Illinois State in digs in every match this season as the sophomore libero registered 15 at Bradley before tacking on 17 more at Loyola, to average 5.33 digs per set for the weekend. Pence also chipped in five assists and three aces over the two-match stretch.

With an average of 5.41 digs per set, Pence currently leads the conference, while also ranking among the national leaders.

Pence and the Illinois State volleyball team are back in action Friday when they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, for a Valley matchup with Indiana State.
