NORMAL – For coach Brock Spack and the Illinois State football team, “it’s been one of those seasons.”

Following a 27-24 road loss to South Dakota last week, Spack and the Redbirds (3-5, 1-4 Missouri Valley Football Conference) now prepare for Saturday’s home match against conference leading South Dakota State (5-2, 4-0).

“(We) need to make our own breaks and take advantage of the opportunities in front of us,” said Spack. “It’s kind of been a broken record this fall. Some of those guys are young players, I get it, but you’re in week, now, 10. So (they’ve) got to start figuring that out.”

The Jackrabbits bring with them receiver Jake Wieneke, who sits at third in the MVFC in receiving per game (101.8). Added to that are his 24 catches, 407 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.

Spack said ISU will have to play with great technique against Wieneke.

“Do a good job of disrupting routes and being able to play the ball in the air very well,” said Spack. “He’s very tall and strong.”

SDSU wields the best passing offense in the Valley at 329.8 yards per game, but Spack said they’re not one dimensional.

“They can run power football. They can run the quarterback. They can run the back. They run power, inside zone,” said Spack. “They have a way of getting back to that.”

Kick-off at Hancock Stadium is 2 p.m. Saturday. Pregame on WJBC and wjbc.com is 1 p.m.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
