MADISON, Wis. – Two second period goals and a pair of third period goals helped push the Madison Capitols past the Thunder, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Alliant Energy Center.
In the final game of a three-game weekend, Bloomington (3-6-2-0, 8 pts) couldn’t overcome the second-period deficit despite controlling the pace of play for much of the game and outshooting the Capitols (4-5-0-0, 8 points).
After a scoreless first period, Madison took the lead on Noah Weber’s power-play goal at the 3:01 mark of the middle frame. Simon Sagissor added to the lead 4:31 later, beating Thunder goaltender Gabe Mollot-Hill.
Easton Brodzinski padded the Capitols lead with the first of his goals 9:32 into the third period and struck for his second of the game some five minutes later.
The Thunder trimmed into the deficit thanks to the youngest member of the team. After making his debut with Bloomington on Saturday, affiliate and Bloomington native Brady Smith fired a wrist shot past Capitols goaltender Dryden McKay to make it a 4-1 game. It was Smith’s first career USHL goal.
But Bloomington couldn’t draw any closer the rest of the way in the first meeting this season between the Eastern Conference foes.
The Thunder are back in action with a pair of games next weekend, making a return trip to Madison on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Cedar Rapids next Saturday.
