NORMAL- The Illinois State women’s basketball team raced out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back, as the Redbirds cruised to a 64-46 exhibition victory Tuesday night on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
ISU led 20-10 after the first quarter and led at the half, 38-27. The Redbirds then used a 13-4 run to start the third quarter capped by a triple from senior Taylor Stewart, which produced a 51-31 advantage at the 3:01 mark, before the Hornets tallied the final six of the stanza to trim the ISU lead to 51-37 after 30 minutes.
The Redbirds netted the first seven points of the final quarter, which gave them their largest lead of the game at 58-37, before cruising to the 64-46 victory.
Sophomore Millie Stevens led a trio in double figures in scoring, as she collected a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while knocking down 5-of-8 from the field. Stewart added 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc, and sophomore Katrina Beck chipped in 10 points.
Junior Hannah Green filled the stat sheet with a game highs of 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks while narrowly missing a double-double with eight points.
As a team, ISU shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field, including 7-of-22 from distance. The Redbirds went to the free throw line 32 times but only made 17. ISU also won the rebounding battle, 54-46.
The Redbird defense held Harris-Stowe to only 24.7 percent (19-of-77) shooting and only 1-of-14 from three.
Angela Randall led the Hornets with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Asia Green added 10 points.
ISU returns to action Friday, Nov. 11, when the Redbirds start off the 2016-17 season at No. 16 Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona.
