NORMAL – Unit 5 has approved a three year contract extension with Superintendent Mark Daniel.

The new contract goes through the 2020 school year and carries an annual base salary of $197,676.

“We are very pleased with the direction the district’s moving in and we are excited that he will continue with us for three more years,” Board of Education President Meta Mickens-Baker said.

Mickens-Baker explained they’re especially pleased with the work Daniel has done to make Unit 5 a “destination district.”

“Many schools have been looking at college readiness over many years, but also bringing in the aspect of career readiness, and how do we get more children – our students – exposed to more career opportunity options,” she said.

Daniel said he’s pleased to have more time to work with the district.

Also Wednesday night, the board held a workshop exploring the idea of entering a redistricting process.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
