KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Illinois State men’s basketball great Doug Collins will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame during an enshrinement ceremony Friday, Nov. 18, beginning at 8 p.m. CT, at the Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland in Kansas City, Missouri.

Along with Collins, DePaul’s Mark Aguirre, Kansas State’s Bob Boozer, La Salle’s Lionel Simmons, UCLA’s Jamaal Wilkes and Georgia’s Dominque Wilkins headline the players in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame’s induction class of 2016. Joining them for the 11th enshrinement ceremony are multi-school coaching legends Hugh Durham and Mike Montgomery.

In his three-year varsity career at Illinois State, Collins averaged 29.1 points per game and totaled 2,240 career points while being named both an All-American and Academic All-American after each season. Following his college career, Collins represented the U.S. in the 1972 Olympics before being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the No. 1 pick in the 1973 NBA Draft. Collins went on to become a four-time NBA All-Star with the 76ers and, after retiring, began a multi-decade NBA coaching career and successful turn as an NBA analyst on ESPN.

An Illinois State Athletics Percy Hall of Fame member, Collins had his No. 20 jersey retired after his final home game in 1973 and is the only Redbird men’s basketball player to receive this honor. Redbird Arena was re-named “Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena” on Feb. 3, 2007, before a sell-out crowd against rival Bradley. Collins is also the first Redbird to be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 2006, the first class was inducted into the newly formed National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. That class included the game’s inventor, James Naismith, and legendary coach, John Wooden. Since that time, eight more classes have been inducted and have included the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Danny Manning, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
