WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., is urging President-elect Donald Trump to avoid an Apprentice-style approach in dealing with younger immigrants.
Durbin is calling for Trump’s administration to shield the group known as Dreamers from deportation. They remain in the country thanks to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which grants temporary reprieve from deportation to certain young undocumented immigrants.
“These kids deserve a chance,” Durbin said. “We’ve invested in them. We’ve given them a good education in American schools and it makes no sense to squander their talents by deporting them to countries they barely know.”
In 2010, Durbin was the first member of Congress to call for the establishment of DACA.
He added close to 740,000 children have signed up for DACA, enabling them to contribute to the United States as police officers, teachers and soldiers.
Trump has said he would reverse many of Obama’s executive actions and orders, including DACA.
