SPRINGFIELD- By now, you’ve heard the advice from doctors. Get your flu shot.
For every article that explains the flu shot will help you, your kids, and your co-workers avoid the flu there are as many claiming flu shots are a scam or are dangerous. How do people know what’s medical advice and what’s not?
Dr. Brian Curtis with OSF Health Care in Peoria said people need to research the websites they visit. If it’s a blog, Curtis said be suspicious, but he thinks you can trust doctors and hospitals.
“The Mayo Clinic has great information, The Cleveland Clinic has great information out there. OSF health Care has great information that’s been medically vetted,” Dr. Curtis explained.
Still, Curtis understands the confusion. “A lot of the misinformation from the people out there are sharing their personal story,” he said. “There’s a personal story that’s tied to (a website) and a tragedy that occurred to them.”
Curtis is quick to say the facts show flu shots are safe, save lives, prevent the spread of the flu, and are not linked to autism. He believes anyone older than six months should get a flu shot this year.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
