BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington aldermen will vote Monday night on making changes to a pair of roads on the city’s east side.
One recommendation is to lower the speed limit from 40 to 30 mph on Hershey Road from Ft. Jesse to Empire. City Manager David Hales explained this would create consistency with Normal, which already has their portion of the road at 30 mph.
“With the lower speed limit it’s been shown that not only cyclists who might be involved in a crash, or pedestrians, certainly the lower the speed limit the less the injury,” he said.
Hales said if the change is approved the city would work to make sure motorists know a change is coming. The alteration would be likely be made within 30 days.
The City Council will also consider widening Linden Street from Locust to Empire. Hales said this would mean changing the road from 26 to 30 feet wide and adding a parking lane on the west side of the street.
Hales said most residents on the street support the project.
“Even though it wouldn’t be as wide as what a new collector street might be we see there are some benefits,” Hales said.
That project would begin in the spring, if approved by the council.
