U-High hoops player hospitalized after collapsing in practice

NORMAL – A University High School basketball player’s life was saved by a trainer after he collapsed in practice Thursday.

The Columbus Dispatch reported Keita Bates-Diop’s younger brother, Kai, collapsed from an apparent heart attack Thursday. A trainer reportedly saved his life using a portable AED machine. Keita Bates-Diop, a native of Normal and current Ohio State basketball player, returned home once he received word of the incident.

Kai Bates-Diop was taken to a Peoria hospital for treatment.

In an email, Kai Bates-Diop’s parents said Kai is recovering nicely. U-High coach Andrew McDowell could not offer comment Friday night.
