SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner spent the weekend in Washington D.C. as Republican state leaders gathered in the nation’s capitol for their winter meeting.
Rauner said the conversations he’d have would be focused on the possible changes to laws that would impact states.
“There’s a lot of changes going on from the federal level,” Rauner said. “We are going to talk about Medicaid, we are going to talk about education, we are going to talk about regulatory relief and more economic growth.”
Honoring Obama
Illinois lawmakers are considering several ways to honor former President Barack Obama. One piece of legislation marks august 4th, Obama’s birthday, as a special day to commemorate the first African-American president. Another makes that date a state holiday.
Rauner was asked about his thoughts on the subject.
“It’s incredibly proud for Illinois that the president came from Illinois and I think it’s awesome and I think we should celebrate it,” Rauner said. I don’t think it should be a paid holiday with forced time off, but I think it should be a day of acknowledgment and celebration.”
Additional bills would name Interstate 55 and the Tri-State Tollway after Obama.
