SPRINGFIELD – Legislation in the Illinois Senate would give child sex abuse victims more time to report the crime.

The measure eliminates the statute of limitations for prosecuting felony sex crimes against children. Attorney General Lisa Madigan is a lead proponent of the bill, saying it can take child abuse victims several years to come forward.

“We should never be in a position where a police officer or a prosecutor tells an adult who survived a childhood sexual assault and who has courageously come forward there is no possibility of holding the offender accountable,” Madigan said.

Scott Cross, who said he was an abuse victim of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, said it should offend everyone’s faith in the judicial system that Illinois laws today would still allow child molestors to avoid prosecution for heinous acts of sexual abuse because the survivor did not come forward in time.

“It took me 36-plus years to come forward,” Cross said. “On average, someone is 42 years old before they are able to deal with this.”

Madigan said it’s estimated nationally that 25 percent of girls and 16 percent of boys are sexually assaulted or abused before they turn 18.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
