SPRINGFIELD – New legislation in Springfield would allow Illinois residents to possess up to one ounce of marijuana.

Marijuana Policy Project Legislative Council Chris Lindsey this proposal is similar to the law put in place in Colorado. He explained the policy project worked on the legislation with the same lawmakers who helped decriminalize possession of certain amounts of marijuana last year.

“We’re just continuing our work with them, and taking the next logical step, and saying it’s time for a better way,” said Lindsey. “It’s one thing to reduce criminal penalties, but it doesn’t really solve the crime that goes with marijuana prohibition. Looking at the successes we’re seeing around the country, we think it’s time to start the conversation in Illinois.”

If the bill is approved, retail sales of marijuana would be subject to the state’s standard 6.25 percent sales tax. The policy project estimates sales from weed could generate between $349 million and $699 million a year.

Lindsey added eight states have already approved recreational use of marijuana “and the sky hasn’t fallen.”
