Rauner marks State Police anniversary with talk of expanding department numbers

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Police are celebrating 95 years of service and Gov. Bruce Rauner wants to give the gift of new cadets.

Eighty-five new cadets will be out on the roads this year and next. With Chicago violence continuing to make national headlines, Rauner plans to deploy troopers north of Interstate 80.

“About 70 of those new cadets will be working in Chicago and the Chicago area working in close cooperation with the Chicago Police Department addressing the plague of violence that is harming so many residents,” Rauner said.

Rauner is declaring Saturday Illinois State Police Day in honor of the anniversary.

“Our agency is looking forward to these classes in which we will train future troopers to become part of the Illinois State Police legacy in taking pride in exceptional service to the citizens of the state of Illinois,” ISP Director Leo Schmitz said.

Rauner also thanked troopers for their service and sacrifices.

“I personally believe we have the finest state police force anywhere of any state in the nation; incredibly well trained, dedicated to their principles of integrity, service and pride,” Rauner said.
