BLOOMINGTON – Illinois Wesleyan softball coach Tiffany Prager feels her predecessor’s presence is still being felt on a team that’s one the verge on a return trip to the Div. III National Championship.

Cat McCreery coached the Titans to three NCAA postseason appearances in three seasons, including a berth in the Final Round in Salem, Va. in 2016.

“She really did a great job of getting them prepared for this stage last year and obviously with them making the World Series, I feel like we have a lot of that experience to lean on,” Prager said.

The Titans look to clinch a return trip to the College World Series. The Titans take on Transylvania in a best of three NCAA Div. III SuperRegional in Lexington, Kentucky starting Friday afternoon.

“We talk about being fearless and just playing loose and playing our game,” Prager said. “We don’t expect them to play perfect and we won’t have to play perfect to win the game.”

Prager said it helps to also have a number of players who are experiencing this for the first time.

“We have a lot of that experience to lean on, however we do have 11 freshman,” Prager said. “That’s the exciting part too. They kind of balance us out and provide that excitement. They don’t really stress about anything. ”

The first game of the super-regional will be played at 4 p.m. Friday. Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday and the third game would be played immediately after if necessary.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
