BLOOMINGTON – The City of Bloomington has hit a milestone in its recycling program: 80 percent participation.

“Reaching 80 percent participation from our residents is an impressive milestone for our community. It highlights the importance of sustainable practices to our community,” explained Public Works Director Jim Karch.

City manager David Hales told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin and Patti Penn the city has made it easy for residents to recycle.

“We provide recycling carts at no additional cost,” Hales said. “That has helped us to see the recycling rate go up.”

The national recycling average is about 35 percent. The city started its recycling program in 2012. It’s recycling rate has grown six percent over the last two years.
