Frank Bins

Frank C. Bins, 77, of Bloomington, passed away at 6:15 p.m., Sunday, June 25, 2017 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 1, 2017 at St. Patrick Church of Merna, Bloomington with Rev. Michael Pica officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, June 30, 2017 at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington with a rosary service at 3:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association, the Salvation Army or Home Sweet Home Ministries.

Frank was born February 21, 1940 in Green Bay, Wisc., the son of Edward and Elizabeth Bins. He married Grace Levens, his college sweetheart, August 1, 1964 at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She survives.

He is also survived by sons, Brett Bins and Bart Bins, both of Arlington, Tex., a daughter, Brenda Hooper of Frisco, Tex.; two grandchildren, Tyler Bins of Arlington, Tex. and Daley Hooper of Frisco, Tex.; one brother, Donald Bins of Green Bay, Wisc.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Donna Bins, Ervin and Eugenia Bins, Marge Bins and in-laws, Justin and Alberta Levens.

Frank retired after 38 years with State Farm Insurance and was very active in the insurance organizations. He was elected Regional Vice President and National Director of the CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters.) He then drove for Unit 5 School District for 12 years. He thoroughly enjoyed the children and following them through their education and attending their sports activities.

Frank graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville and was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and played 2 seasons of semi-pro football for the Sheboygan Redwings. He was a life-long supporter of the Packers and Cubs and had attended 2 Packer Super Bowls with his sons.

Frank could answer any trivia sports questions with his marvelous memory; he was called upon in many situations to recall facts on all sports.

Faith, family and friends were very important in Frank’s life. He enjoyed people and made many friends in his years of personal and business travel.

Shirley Green
Shirley Green

Shirley R. Green, 94, of Saunemin, Ill., passed away at 6:10 p.m. on June 22, 2017 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, Ill.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cullom with Pastor Mauricio Vieira officiating. The family requests casual attire. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral service. According to the family’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following the service. Burial of ashes will be held at West Lawn Cemetery at a later date. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cullom or Evenglow Lodge instead of sending flowers. Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Cullom is handling arrangements for the family.

Shirley was born January 25, 1923, a daughter of Carl C. and Georgianna (Foesterling) Sancken. She married Donald J. Green on November 25, 1943. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2010.

She is survived by one son: Ronald (Marcia) E. Green of Cullom, Ill.; one daughter: Cheryl (Larry- deceased August 3, 2011) L. Lowery of Munster, Ind,; two grandchildren: Kimberly (Michael) Lowery Walker of Cheverly, Maryland and Kristin Lowery of Pahoa, Hawaii; one step-grandson: Christopher Fraher of Rantoul, Ill.; two step-great grandsons: John and Weston Fraher of Rantoul; four nieces and six nephews; and one sister: Marian Chapman of Pontiac, Ill.. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one infant daughter: Judy Ann.

Shirley was educated in Saunemin schools graduating in 1940 and Bowling Green Business School.

She was an avid collector and loved to collect Fenton glassware, Lowell Davis figurines, and just about anything. She loved going to garage sales and auctions. She was an early exhibitor at the Threshermen’s Reunion in Pontiac for over 45 years and the Gladiola Festival in Momence. She loved square dancing, playing cards, going to Branson, MO, and visiting friends. In addition to being a homemaker and working on the farm, she worked at H & R Block for many years. She was a Cub Scout den leader for many years.

Michelle A. Ocean, 68, of Pontiac, Ill. passed away at 9:28 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 at OSF St. James – John W. Albrecht Medical Center in Pontiac.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac on Saturday, July 1, 2017 with Father Adam Cesarek officiating. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 pm on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Cullom, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Michelle was born January 24, 1949 in Pontiac a daughter of Donald and Mary R. “Jean” (Kerrins) McCaughey. She married Daniel Ocean on August 25, 1973 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac. He survives.

She was educated in the Pontiac schools and went on to study education at Winston Churchill Junior College in Pontiac, IL. Michelle then went to Des Moines Area Community College for her Hotel Restaurant Management degree. She ran a catering business, J and M Catering, for many years. Michelle also did a correspondent class from Minnesota to receive her Certified Dietary Management (CDM) degree. She went on to work as the Dining Services Supervisor at Meadows Mennonite Home in rural Chenoa for fourteen years.

Michelle was a devout member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac, making sure she always attended mass. Michelle enjoyed life and loved her Lord and was proud to be Irish.

Austin Sherwood
Austin Sherwood

Austin Patrick Sherwood, 25, formerly of Bloomington, passed away at 5:07 p.m., Saturday, June 24, 2017 after a two-vehicle crash near his home in Fort Collins, Colo.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 30, 2017 at St. Patrick Church of Merna, Bloomington with Rev. Dustin Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Merna with military rites accorded. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Austin was born February 21, 1992 in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of Jeffrey R. and Brenda S. Braton Sherwood.

He is survived by his mother, Brenda Sherwood of Aurora, CO, his father, Jeffrey (Tara Conklin) Sherwood of Bloomington; three brothers, Andrew (Hillary) Sherwood of Colorado Springs, Colo., Christopher (Jamie) Sherwood of San Diego, Calif. and Sam Sherwood of Quantico, Virginia; four nephews, Joshua, Henry, Ben and Luke; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and the love of his life, Ronni Norton of Ft. Collins, Colo. He is also survived by his dog, Tig, his St. Mary’s family, his Central Catholic family, his Marine Corps family, his Bondi Beach Bar family, Lucky Joe’s family and his New Belgium Brewery family.

Austin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Carol Sherwood and Sam and Joyce Braton.

Austin was a 2010 graduate of Central Catholic High School, and a member of the 2008 State Champion football team. He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran, serving in the HMLA 269 “Gunrunners” Squadron which was deployed to the Middle East in February 2014. Austin was an air crew chief on the UH-1Y Yankee Helicopter. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Austin was enrolled at Colorado State University and was a member of VFW Post 15006 in Ft. Collins, CO.

Austin was loved and inspired by all those who knew him.

Elizabeth “Libby” Streid Wahls, 91 of Chenoa, passed away at 9 a.m., Monday, June 26, 2017 at Evenglow Health Center, Pontiac.

Cremation rites have been accorded with a private family graveside inurnment to take place in Chenoa Township Cemetery, Chenoa. A visitation with the family will follow the service from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Chenoa.

The family suggests that memorial contributions left in Libby’s name be directed to Chenoa Public Library, Chenoa or Evenglow Health Center, Pontiac. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa is in charge of arrangements.

Libby was born on October 7, 1925; in Bloomington; the daughter of Albert and Velma (Varney) Streid. She married Marvin W. Wahls on June 18, 1950 in Chenoa. Her husband survives in Chenoa.

Other survivors include two sons, Richard (Marcia) Wahls of Lexington; Pastor Doug (Patty) Wahls of Hayti, Missouri; daughter in-law, Barb Wahls of Chenoa; five grandchildren, Scott, Steve, Suzie, David, and Kalli; and seven great grandchildren.

Her parents, one son, Daniel Wahls; one sister, Ferne Snell and one brother, Dale Streid preceded her in death.

Libby graduated from Chenoa High School and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana; in Home Economics and a master’s degree from Illinois State University, Normal. She worked as a Home Economics teacher at El Paso High School for four years and as a Home Economics instructor at ISU, Normal for nine years.

Mrs. Wahls was past president of Chenoa Women’s Club and the Chenoa Library Board. She was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Chenoa and had served as Sunday school superintendent. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed painting, quilting, sewing, playing the organ, dancing and traveling.

Family was most important to Libby. Her family will remember her as being a caring wife and devoted mother and grandmother.
