SPRINGFIELD – Another special session gets underway in Springfield Wednesday with the focus on education funding.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has threatened to make changes to Senate Bill 1 which lawmakers passed in May, so the Senate is refusing to send it to him.

State Representative Dan Brady tells WJBC’s Scott Laughlin and Patti Penn the staredown between the governor and Democratic leaders is holding schools hostage.

“Let the bill go to (Rauner’s) desk,” Brady implored the Democratic leadership. “You overrode his veto last time. You want a showdown, let’s have that showdown. See who can get the votes, Speaker.”

Rauner wants to move some money that’s been targeted for Chicago Public Schools and redistribute it downstate.

“We don’t use little tricks to delay things,” Brady said. “Send it to the governor. He’s said what he is going to do and let’s have a vote whether on an override or not. Let’s quit holding schools wherever they are in the state of Illinois hostage.”

Some schools might not open this fall without certain funding.

Lawmakers are scheduled to convene at noon.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
