SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate President John Cullerton said Wednesday he will send the education funding reform bill to Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday.
Cullerton said he hasn’t advanced the measure for fear that Rauner’s promised amendatory veto will kill the bill and prevent money from going to schools. Cullerton said he’s been trying to set up a meeting with the governor.
“The purpose of the meetings was to talk about how I don’t to release the bill yet and how I want to talk about the way in which we can perhaps reach a compromise,” Cullerton said.
Cullerton added if they don’t meet, he will move the legislation to the governor’s desk on Monday.
Rauner said there is no reason the senate is still sitting on the legislation. he wants to issue an amendatory veto, removing what he calls a bailout for Chicago schools and making sure schools open on time.
“President Cullerton should be ashamed of himself,” Rauner declared. “He’s here, he should walk right in this room right now and hand me that bill. What’s his excuse? It’s unconscionable. It’s wrong.”
Cullerton said he’s been trying to meet with the governor to work out a compromise but Rauner refuses.
