NORMAL – Normal City Manager Mark Peterson has announced his retirement.

Peterson said today that he plans to step down at the end of March of next year. He said he announced his retirement plans today to allow the town adequate time to find his replacement.

Peterson will have spent more than 30 years with Normal when he retires. He was hired in February 1988 as an assistant city manager, and was appointed city manager in June 1998 to replace the retiring David Anderson.

Peterson also serves on the boards of MetCom Emergency Communications Center, the Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council , the Central Illinois Regional Broadband Network (CIRBN), the McLean County Regional Planning Commission Executive Committee, the Community Development Corporation, the BN Advantage Leadership Council, Connect Transit and others.

“While it is hard to imagine the town without Mark Peterson as city manager,” said Normal Mayor Chris Koos in a release, “we are very fortunate that he is allowing us the better part of eight months to carefully consider our next steps.”

The Normal Town Council plans to begin preliminary discussions to replace Peterson during a special executive session on August 11.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
